PR Manager at

Socrates Nederland

Overview

At the beginning of the academic year of 2021 - 2022, I started as PR Manager at the Dutch non-profit organization 'Socrates Nederland'. Socrates is an organization for brilliant students to offer them a platform to showcase their talents and worth through connecting with companies, etc., and give them a head start on the job market.

As PR Manager my primary task is to promote upcoming events since collaborations with companies, organizations, schools, and the government are the primary source of income and ensure the future of Socrates. This means it's important to learn how to convince others through both text and image to make sure our members will attend.

Responsibilities

- Writing the monthly newsletter

- Creating and posting content for the socials (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn)

- Promote upcoming events via mail, social media, and Whatsapp

- Making sure every 'chapter' promotes (effectively)

- Running the webshop

One of the main goals was to make the social media feed more attractive when I started as PR Manager. Not a rebrand, but a reevaluation was necessary. Aesthetics do matter and not using them correctly can throw people off.

That's why researching was the next thing to do. Since most of the posts give information about an event, it was important to learn how you can inform your audience in one look without looking at the caption. Multiple accounts were studied, from esteemed schools to news outlets, to find a nice balance that both incorporated Socrates' style and showing the most important information on the post.

A challenge faced with designing for an already established organization is that there is simply a bit less freedom. Socrates' signature colour is 'Socrates Blue' (#11224e) so keeping to use that throughout the content is a smart move as it is associated with the organization.

Then there are also the fonts that are established in the stylebook so you have to discover yourself when there's room for another font or if you have to use the assigned ones. Freedom and experimenting are encouraged as long as you keep the company's image as "exclusive and professional".

Package Design

The webshop is relatively young and there was not much thought put into the packaging. That's why designing Thank You cards were the best option since they are easy and cheap to make, but they show that extra little thought to the customer. 

The cards are simple but professional and chic. The colours used are from Socrates' colour palette and the message shown is kind to make the organization more approachable. A hashtag is also mentioned to convince people to share their purchases on social media to promote our sweaters through the customers.
